Noise protection as a system

A wall that protects, turns green, blends in.

RAU builds green noise barriers that do more than block sound: effective noise reduction, a design that needs no heavy foundations, and a natural look that fits its surroundings. One partner from the first idea to installation.

On-site advice

We look at the site and propose a solution that works technically and makes economic sense.

Planning

Wall alignment, space required, tender texts, construction drawings and planting.

Installation

Fully installed by RAU, or supplied as a kit for a contractor or for self-build.

Service

Our service teams can take care of the planting and maintenance.

How a noise barrier works

  1. 0104

Without a wall, the noise travels freely

Sound spreads from the road in all directions. In this example, about 72 dB(A) reach the house 25 m from the road.

  2. 0204

The wall casts a sound shadow

A 4 m wall interrupts the direct path. Behind it, only sound diffracted over the top of the wall arrives, and it is much weaker. At the house the level drops to about 54 dB(A) in this example.

  3. 0304

What counts is the detour over the top

The longer the detour compared with the wavelength, the deeper the shadow. That is why height and position matter most. Low tones, such as the hum of transformers and battery storage, bend more: at 100 Hz the same wall reduces the level by about 12 dB instead of 18 dB.

  4. 0404

    And it turns green

The shielding comes from the wall body, a steel cage filled with soil from the excavation. The planting changes little about that. It turns the structure into a green wall that blends into its surroundings.

Worked example, 4 m wall. Source 0.5 m high, 5 m in front of the wall. Receiver 2 m high, 20 m behind it. Simplified model (diffraction after Maekawa), not a product value. The actual effect follows from the noise forecast for your project. Cross-section, to scale.

How they are built

Three designs, one purpose.

  1. 01

    RAU Klimawand R3

A steel cage lined with coir geotextile and filled with soil, ideally the spoil from the site. Shallow foundation on a recycled base course, no deep piling. Climbers grow up the mesh.

    • Up to 12 m high
    • Base width approx. 0.8–2.0 m
    • Crown approx. 60–80 cm

  2. 02

    RAU Rock Extensiv

Pre-assembled elements of fibre cement with water-repellent stone wool, slotted between steel posts. The horizontal bed joints give it a calm look. Made for tight corridors and can be planted later.

    • Up to 10 m high
    • From 13 cm thick
    • Fitted between steel posts

  3. 03

    RAU Rock Mobil

Mobile concrete bases, galvanised steel posts and the same pre-assembled elements. It stands without earthworks, goes up and comes down quickly and moves on with the site.

    • Approx. 25 cm wide
    • Base: mobile concrete blocks
    • For hire or purchase

Location, rough length and height are enough for a first assessment. We will come back to you with a first assessment.
