Klagenfurt am Wörthersee combines the flair of a lakeside town with the requirements of a provincial capital. The city stretches from Lake Wörthersee in the west via the city center to the industrial area in the east, and is surrounded by the A2 Süd freeway in the north. Those who live in Annabichl, Welzenegg or St. Ruprecht are familiar with the traffic noise of the highway; those who live in the city center or by the lake are more familiar with the local traffic and the seasonal changes caused by tourism. The Lakeside Park as a technology and business location has also led to a higher traffic density in the south-western part of the city. At RAU.bayern, we supply noise barriers from the Allgäu to Klagenfurt – to private developers, commercial enterprises, hotels and restaurants on the lake as well as to municipal clients. Our focus is on green noise protection systems that do more than just dampen noise: they bring vegetation into sealed areas and blend in better with Klagenfurt’s green cityscape than pure concrete or steel constructions. We will advise you personally on site and develop a proposal that suits your specific situation – whether on the lakeshore, in a residential area or in a commercial environment.

Noise protection between Lake Wörthersee and the city highway - Klagenfurt's special mix

Klagenfurt is acoustically a special case. On the one hand, there is the adventure area around Lake Wörthersee, with a mixture of housing, tourism, local recreation and gastronomy. On the other side is the A2 Süd highway, which touches the city area in the north and connects Klagenfurt with Graz and Italy. In between are the inner-city traffic arteries such as Völkermarkter Straße and Südring, where residential and commercial areas alternate.

For noise protection planning, this means that a wall in Krumpendorf or Pörtschach on the western shore of Lake Wörthersee has different requirements than a wall in Annabichl in the immediate vicinity of the highway. In the lake area, it is often a question of protecting hotels, guesthouses and residential buildings from through traffic; on the A2, the focus is on classic highway noise protection issues, with correspondingly high wall heights.

Our RAU systems cover both requirement profiles. For residential and tourist locations by the lake, we often recommend absorbent walls between 2.5 and 3.5 meters high, combined with greenery, because green walls blend in better with the landscape than pure concrete structures. For locations closer to the A2, we talk about higher walls, usually between 3.5 and 5 meters, with appropriate statics and choice of materials.

There are also transitional situations within these two poles: if you live in Lakeside Park or around the university, you have to deal with a mixture of commuter traffic, occasional commercial traffic and quieter periods at the weekend. We will discuss with you what specifically disturbs you and when it is at its strongest – this will help to dimension the wall and its height correctly.

It is important to consider the microclimate at the lake: humidity, occasional foggy days and fluctuations caused by the lake itself influence the choice of materials. For locations close to the lake, we choose corrosion-resistant components and plantings that can cope with the warm, humid summers and sometimes harsh winters in Klagenfurt Bay.

Journey to Klagenfurt and delivery via the Tauernautobahn

It is around 420 kilometers from Kaufbeuren to Klagenfurt. The route leads via the A7 to the north, the A8 towards Salzburg and from there the A10 Tauernautobahn through the Tauern and Katschberg tunnels directly to Carinthia. By truck, we estimate a journey time of around four and a half hours, provided the A10 is free. In summer and at weekends – keyword: southbound travel – we deliberately plan deliveries outside peak times to avoid delays.

In Klagenfurt, the A2 junctions Klagenfurt-West, Klagenfurt-East and Klagenfurt-North are the most important access points to the city area. For deliveries to the Wörthersee – to Krumpendorf, Pörtschach or Velden – we use the A2 West exit and the Wörtherseeufer roads. We usually reach inner-city addresses with articulated trucks without any problems, only in the narrow streets of Klagenfurt city center or in the residential streets around the Lendkanal do we work with smaller vehicles or reloading on the outskirts of the city.

During the peak travel season, we expect longer travel times on the A10 and plan accordingly; you will receive a specific delivery time window from us, which we can also meet.

For installation, we have experienced partner companies in Carinthia who are familiar with the local conditions – with the building regulations, with the requirements of properties near the lake and with the seasonal peculiarities in the tourism sector. For smaller projects, we use our own fitters from the Allgäu region, while for larger projects we coordinate with local companies. For you, this means continuous responsibility on the part of the manufacturer and rapid response on site. Hotels and restaurants by the lake in particular, which often want to install noise protection structures outside the peak season, appreciate this reliable planning capability – delivery and installation within a clear time window without disrupting the main operating period.

FAQs:

Hotels by the lake often have a dual requirement: they want to protect their guests from traffic noise, but also do not want to spoil the landscape with a massive wall. Green noise barriers are a proven solution here because they are technically effective and blend in visually with the surroundings. For terrace areas, outdoor restaurants and hotel gardens, we often work with wall heights of between two and three meters and dense greenery that makes the wall practically disappear in summer. We take seasonal operations into account and usually schedule installations in the off-season.

Yes, as long as the choice of material is designed for this. We use corrosion-resistant fastenings and construction elements for locations close to the lake that can cope with the higher humidity. With green walls, there is the additional effect that the planting itself stabilizes the immediate micro-environment and buffers fluctuations in humidity. For long-term maintenance, we recommend an annual visual inspection of the fixing points and planting – a manageable effort that extends the service life of the wall.

The statics of our walls are designed for the usual local wind and snow loads, i.e. for alpine conditions in Carinthia. With proper installation and within the framework of the calculated load assumptions, structural failure practically never occurs. Damage caused by exceptional events – a storm beyond the design basis, an accident – is usually covered by your homeowners’ or liability insurance. We recommend that you have the noise barrier included in your insurance policy with a photo and value. In the event of damage, we supply the construction documents required for the claims settlement.

Yes, this is actually a common combination. A noise barrier two to three meters high also automatically provides privacy – it prevents views from the neighbouring property or the street. This effect is further enhanced when combined with greenery. If you are planning a privacy screen anyway, a noise barrier can fulfill two functions at the same time, often at a similar or only moderately higher price than a pure privacy screen. We will discuss with you whether this dual use makes sense for your project.

The state of Carinthia and individual municipalities support noise protection measures in certain constellations, especially where residents are affected by main roads, the A2 or railroad lines. Programs change in detail, so it is worth making an up-to-date inquiry with the state of Carinthia or your municipality. In some cases, there are subsidies for tourism businesses via economic or environmental railways. We will prepare the technical documents for you so that you can submit an application immediately.

Green noise barriers are generally classified as non-combustible or flame-retardant because the load-bearing structure consists of mineral or metallic components. The living vegetation contains water and is therefore not itself a fire accelerant – woody parts can pose a risk in extremely dry conditions. In residential areas in Klagenfurt and by the lake, the fire protection requirements are usually met without any special conditions; in the case of commercial properties or special fire protection areas, we check this on a case-by-case basis.
